// Digital Fashion - Why should it be 'wearable' ? //
Ever since I started working in Digital Fashion - so for about 3 years - I've been asking myself this question: Why does an outfit in a Digital World need to resemble an outfit of the Physical World? Or put in a different way; Why do so many designers focus on achieving (physical) resemblance while there's nothing like gravity or body-fit to keep into account?
Being an outsider to the Fashion industry - I was educated as an architect - I am fascinated by exploring NEW possibilities the digital 'canvas' offers. I tend to see most current Digital Fashion initiatives as 'Rembrandt painting a representation of an existing scene onto a new canvas'
Why can't a Digital outfit be like 'Salvador Dali painting a surreal representation of a storyline using a humanoid shape as a canvas'? In other words; blending artforms and exploring new frontiers - since we're not hindered by limitations anyways.
During the last years I've been sharing some imagery of first experiments - see the movie below (captured from Epic UnrealEngine) - still built upon the appearance of a physical outfit and maybe a bit too abstract though.
With the help of AI tools like Midjourney I found new inspiration to further continue my exploration of blending artforms using the 'humanoid canvas' - I'm planning to share my journey here as well.
What do you think? Can new Artforms and Cultures be born - linked to Digital Fashion?
